The Health and Safety executive commissioned a study "The costs and benefits of active case management and rehabilitation for musculoskeletal disorders". They say:
"There is good evidence that case management methods are cost-effective and stronger evidence that best practice rehabilitation approaches have potential to significantly reduce long term sickness absence. " HSE RR494
Pre-employment osteopathic assessment.
Potential employees can be examined and questioned by an experienced osteopath. A full report on findings can be provided to the employer detailing previous history of injury and the statistical likely hood of reoccurrence. The suitability of the employee can be assessed in relation to the work task. The cost of the assessment and report is £146.00. This is a very small sum in comparison to the cost of even one episode of back pain.
Occupational MSD Musculoskeletal Medical Service.
Work related injuries can be very expensive for employers. A fast intervention will shorten the episode and the seriousness of the effects of the injury. Employees can be referred direct to our experience osteopaths. The extent and nature of the injury can be fully documented immediately, before any secondary problems have developed. This initial rapid assessment is often very valuable in any later litigation.
The correct management can be begun immediately. This may be some treatment and some return to work. Any changes required in work practices can be immediately communicated to the workplace.
Employers have control over the process. They receive regular update reports on the management of conditions and the time frame for return to work.
If conditions are more serious then diagnostic imaging and reporting can be quickly arranged and the employee moved on to specialist care.
Combined Pre-Employment and MSD Management Service
The combination of Pre-Employment Screening and Occupational Musculoskeletal medical service makes for a very effective HR tool. Employees have an existing relationship with the Osteopath. They therefore accept the role of the osteopath in managing their musculoskeletal condition. Employees can self refer for advice on working or not BEFORE taking any time off.
It is possible that someone with a back injury could miss a few hours of work, be examined, advised and treated and returned to work by lunch time the same day as the injury.
