What happens during my first osteopathy appointment?
Your first osteopathy appointment is a complete assessment designed to identify what’s causing your pain and create a clear plan to help you recover. It’s a relaxed, supportive consultation where your osteopath focuses on understanding your symptoms, assessing your movement, and giving safe, tailored treatment.
We’re happy to offer guidance. Many patients contact us first for an assessment so they understand what is causing their pain and what type of treatment is most suitable.

1. A detailed discussion about your symptoms
Your osteopath will begin by asking about:
your pain or problem
when it started
what makes it better or worse
any previous injuries or medical history
This helps ensure your treatment is safe, appropriate and specific to you.
Patients often find this part reassuring, as it gives space to explain everything in full.
2. A physical examination to understand the cause
You’ll be asked to perform gentle movements so your osteopath can assess:
posture and alignment
joint mobility
muscle tension
nerve involvement (if relevant)
This hands-on assessment is an important part of identifying why your pain has developed
and which structures are affected.
3. A clear explanation of what’s going on
Your osteopath will talk you through their findings in simple, understandable language.
You’ll learn:
what they believe is causing your symptoms
how the issue has developed
whether your pain is coming from muscles, joints, nerves or a combination
what the best treatment options are
The goal is to make your diagnosis clear and help you feel confident about the plan.
4. Hands-on osteopathic treatment (if appropriate)
Most patients receive treatment during their first visit. This may include:
gentle hands-on technique
soft-tissue massagejoint mobilisation
stretching
manipulation (joint clicking - if appropriate)
manual therapy
movement and posture advice
Treatment is always adapted to your comfort level, age and health needs.
5. Your personalised recovery plan
By the end of your appointment, you’ll know:
what the problem is
how osteopathy can help
how many sessions you’re likely to need
exercises or lifestyle changes that may speed up recovery
when you should expect to feel improvement
If further tests, imaging or a GP referral would be helpful, your osteopath will explain why and guide you through the next steps.
Your first osteopathy appointment is a thorough, supportive consultation that combines assessment, hands-on treatment and a clear plan. It’s designed to help you understand your condition, reduce pain and move confidently towards recovery.
